A framework is constructed for analyzing finite element methods based on a Mindlin-Reissner formulation of elastic plate theory. This framework, whose novel feature is a mesh dependent energy norm, is utilized to examine error estimates for some specific low-order finite element schemes with three degrees of freedom at each vertex of a triangulation.
