Abstract: We completely characterize cosymplectic and $alpha$-cosymplectic Lie algebras in terms of corresponding symplectic Lie algebras and suitable derivations on them. Several examples are given and classification results are obtained in dimension five for cosymplectic, $K$-cosymplectic and coK"ahler Lie algebras.
