This paper presents a study of a nonlinear Dirac-like (NLD) equation that can be deduced from the so-called Barut-Zanghi (BZ) model of a classical spinning particle. The original NLD equation has been discovered using Clifford algebra methods by \textit{M. Pavšic} et al, [Phys. Lett. B 318, 481 (1993)]. Here the authors present the NLD equation in the usual formalism used by physicists. They ``quantize'' the BZ model and present interesting insights concerning the foundations of quantum theory, in particular, the zitterbewegung issue.
