This is the write up of a set of lectures presented at Erice by the author. The first lecture is an introduction to beta functions and asymptotic freedom. Lecture two is about black hole complementarity, conformal invariance and its breakdown, including a discussion of anomalies. Lecture 3 is about what the role of beta functions may play in black hole physics. In particular how they can make coupling constants computable.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1279.00055].
