    \textit{A. Einstein} hatte zu Anbeginn der Entwicklung der Ralativitätstheorie die Linearität der \textit{Lorentz}transformationen auf Grund der Homogenität von Raum und Zeit gefordert. Diese Begründung ist unnötig, wenn man lediglich Invarianz der Wellengleichung \[ \frac {\partial ^2 \Phi }{\partial x^{'2}_1} + \frac {\partial ^2 \Phi } {\partial x^{'2}_2} + \dots + \frac {\partial ^2 \Phi }{\partial x^{'2}_n} = 0 \quad (n \neq 2) \] gegenüber infinitesimalen Transformationen der Art: \[ x'_r = x_r + \varepsilon \chi _r (x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n) \quad (r=1, 2, \dots, n) \] verlangt. Schon daraus ergibt sich notwendig: \[ \chi _i = \alpha _i + kx_i + \beta _{ik} x_k \quad (k, \alpha _i, \beta _{ik} = - \beta _{ki}\;\text{Konstanten} ). \]
