A surface can be decomposed into a simple polygon, called a marked polygon, through a series of cuts made on it. The authors define multiply periodic mappings from the domain defined over the hyperbolic disc to the surface in \(\mathbb{R}^ 3\). The method results in a single domain, global parametrization for surfaces with handles.
