This paper, aimed at an audience with hardly any mathematical background, is devoted to the indidvidual construction with ruler and compass of \(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3}, \sqrt{4}\) [sic], \(\sqrt{5}, \sqrt{6}\), as well as to figures consisting of stacks of rectangles (or of cubes) whose sides (or sides and diagonals) are in ratios involving the above square roots. The author then introduces a certain page in Lindisfarne Gospels, the Matthew Cross-Carpet Page (folio 26v), and suggests a way in which it could have been laid out, with \(\sqrt{2}\) and \(\sqrt{3}\) showing up in the measurements.
