The author investigates a free boundary problem for spacelike surfaces in a three-dimensional Minkowski space when the energy functional involves the area of the surface and a timelike potential. He considers spaces, which he calls stationary bands, that are invariant in a parallel coordinate to the support plane. The existence of such surfaces and their qualitative properties are established.
