This is a survey article from a talk of the author at the ``Primeras Jornadas de Teoria de Numeros'', and contains an overview of the results from different papers of him, concerning the application of theta functions to the determination of good equations and their periods for general hyperelliptic curves, as well as applications concerning the construction of elliptic curves with everywhere good reduction.
