Let \(K\) and \(L\) be two simplicial complexes with \(K\) finite and let \(f:K \to L\) be a simplicial map. The authors establish first a formula for the difference \(\chi(f(K))-\chi(K)\) in terms of the fibers of \(f\), see Lemma 2.1. This formula is then used to relate the Euler characteristics and the number of singularities of stable mappings in several low dimensional situations, e.g. singular surfaces in a 3-dimensional manifold.
