The authors presented an improved model of the cardio-respiratory system to investigate the physiological factors that determine the onset of Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) which is a periodic breathing pattern. The mathematical model consists of eight ordinary differential equations. From Hopf bifurcation analysis, the model shows that in addition to transport delay, CSR may arise due to an increase of the ventilation-perfusion ratio, feedback control gain, left heart volume, lung congestion or cardiovascular efficiency. An advantage of the model is that the system parameters can be taken directly from clinical observations and the physiology literature. The model is also consistent with medical observations.
