The scattering matrix for the defocusing matrix Zakharov-Shabat systems on the real line is studied. Moreover, the authors solve the inverse problem for Zakharov-Shabat systems with a potential from \(L^1(\mathbb R)\) and give the characterization of the S-matrix.
