The author presents an axiomatic approach to electrodynamics, in which the metric enters as late as possible, i.e., after introducing the axioms related to conservation of physical quantities: electric charge, magnetic flux, and energy-momentum. Then the metric is introduced by the constitutive relations between the four-dimensional excitations and field strengths. Also a line of research is mentioned in which the notion of non-inertial observer and its influence on observer-dependent Maxwell equations are studied.
