This is the most complete outline of the history of algebraic (that is, non-topological) semigroup theory. Previous outlines were written by the reviewer, then by Ulrich Knauer and other authors, and also were covered to some degree in books on semigroup theory. However, none of these previous sources is as detailed as this paper.
