The paper is devoted to the achievements of the author and his school in approximation theory and associated fields. The first and second sections are biographical, in the third one, the author writes about his doctoral study in Canada and returning to Germany. In section 4, the author talks about the Oberwolfach conferences supplying full lists of main participants. Section 5 is devoted to the conferences connected with dyadic analysis and other tools of signal processing. In section 6, applications of functional analysis to numerical analysis, ergodic theory, Lax-Kantorovitch-Richtmeyer equivalence theorems and other questions are discussed. In section 7, some combinatorial and number-theoretic problems are considered, while section 8 is connected with the author's investigations in the history of mathematics. The list of references consists of 54 papers, half of them belongs to the author (with co-authors).
