Following geostatisticians, the authors use the variogram function for interpolation in random fields. They discuss different methods for the estimation of an analytic variogram model and show how to derive estimates of some functionals of the random field from the variogram. The paper contains two interesting applications: contour mapping of the water level in a groundwater reservoir and estimation of the average rainfall over an area.
