The authors analyse the growth of microbial cultures by means of stochastic processes. They obtain a differential equation which describes the expected number of cells in a compartment for several cases. A compartment structure is used to take into account cell maturation stages, having an inflow of cells from one compartment to the next. Dilution and cell division are also considered. It should be noted that this differential equation was also discussed further by \textit{J. Kiefer} [Advances in microbial engineering (Mariánské Lázně, 1972), Part 1, 7-13, Wiley (1973)].
