The author studies the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues, \(\lambda\), of \(y''+(\lambda p_{10}+p_{11})y'+(\lambda^ 2p_{20}+\lambda p_{21}+p_{22})y=0,\) \(y(0)=y(\pi)=0\), where the \(p_{ik}\) are piecewise \(C^{\infty}\) real-valued functions and the roots of the quadratic equation \(\theta^ 2+p_{10}\theta +p_{20}=0\) coincide on part, but not all, of [0,\(\pi\) ].
