We show that for a homogeneous isotropic rigid/perfectly plastic solid the work done in achieving a given state of homogeneous finite deformation is least for a path of deformation on which the rate of strain is coaxial with the required final state of strain throughout the deformation process. This result is established in respect of an arbitrary convex yield surface and is illustrated by a specific example.
