In a psychophysical experiment in 1908 Lemberger determined the perception of equal sweetness of two concentrations; one of sucrose and the other of crystallose. It was found that the ratio of the concentrations at which the sweetnesses were perceived to be equal increased with increasing concentration of sucrose. By contrast, subjects are able to match red and green lights for brightness intensity. This paper determines conditions which a measurement function must satisfy for such matching to be possible.
