This paper describes a method for effectively computing the ramification index in the Puiseux expansions of an algebraic function. Moreover, the number of steps this algorithm requires can be determined beforehand. Use is made of previously obtained results [cf. the author and \textit{E. G. Straus}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 280, 637-657 (1983; Zbl 0528.10011)].
