A partial differential operator with constant coefficients is said to be hyperbolic-(hypo)elliptic if it has a fundamental solution which is real analytic outside some proper cone with vertex at the origin. In this paper, the author makes a detailed study of this class of operators in spaces of ultradistributions. In particular an algebraic characterization of this class of operators is given.
