In this paper the author illustrates the use of the symbolic manipulation language MACSYMA to automate many of the steps involved in algebraic and calculus operations in the analysis of instabilities and wave propagation in warm plasma. He discusses the general framework by which the complicated expressions which characterize the derivations can be simplified to the point where the MACSYMA procedures could be used. As an example he considers the classical problem of oscillations in a homogeneous uniformly magnetized plasma.
