The authors state a set of five desiderata for a definition of an index of fuzziness and they suggest a mathematical expression which satisfies these prerequisites. This approach generalizes some of the indices which have been proposed previously in the literature. The idea of using the variability of membership as an index of fuzziness is not new, see the reviewer's paper in Cybernetica 22, 47-87 (1979; Zbl 0433.94032) (eq. 56, p. 71).
