The paper deals with the appropriate choice of shape in terms of camber and thickness for a rigid leaflet in a two-dimensional flow, assuming that both the forward and reversed flows would be uniform in the absence of the leaflet. The simplest problem of this sort is that of an airfoil in an unbounded uniform stream. This is analyzed in detail for the steady case. The analysis of the problem is also carried out for the case when there is an infinite plane wall boundary parallel to the undisturbed stream. As the analytical solution is not possible, the problem is studied numerically and the results show that the optimal leaflet not only is cambered, but also possesses thickness. The optimal distribution of both these quantities are obtained and also the corresponding hinge point. The paper is of considerable significance since a suitable design of a leaflet type valve is provided for designers of such valves which are of immense use in physiological systems such as cardiovascular systems.
