Let C be the row space over GF(2) of the incidence matrix of a 3- (112,12,1) design D (if such a design exists). It was shown by \textit{R. H. F. Denniston} [J. Aust. Math. Soc. 10, 214-218 (1969; Zbl 0175.477)] and by \textit{F. J. MacWilliams}, \textit{N. J. A. Sloane} and \textit{J. G. Thompson} [J. Comb. Theory Ser. A 14, 66-78 (1973; Zbl 0251.05020)] that C does not have vectors of weight 16. These results dependend on computer searchers. By counting arguments (using hand computation) an analysis of C is carried out which yields an independent proof of the result stated above. However, it was shown by \textit{C. W. H. Lam} et al [Disc. Math. 45, 319-321 (1983; Zbl 0511.05020)] that the design D mentioned above does not exist and again, this statement depends on a computer search.
