The research in this paper is motivated by engineering requirements in the designing of cogwheels. The authors deal with the question if an involute of a circle can be approximated sufficiently closely by an arc of a circle. They give a solution measuring the distance perpendicular to the involute. The problem is still open when the distances are measured perpendicular to the circle.
