Patterns and waves in nonlinear biological and geological systems have certain universal properties but also some mathematically interesting differences. Models of a variety of these phenomena are reviewed and compared. Applications to developmental biology (early Fucus egg self- organization and \(Ca^{2+}\) fertilization waves in Medaka eggs) and geological phase transition kinetic patterns (Liesegang bands, metamorphic layering and stylolites) are presented.
