The problem of approximating characteristic functions of fuzzy sets and fuzzy relations is considered from a nontraditional point of view, namely, to choose from those membership functions which are consistent with the given relations the one which best approximates the given one. The concept of consistency is defined in terms of fuzzy integrals and is interpreted in such a way that elements which are strongly related by a newly introduced fuzzy relation acquire a corresponding strong degree of membership. Consistent membership functions can be reconstructed by storing samplings, called ''experiments''.
