In 1978 \textit{I. M. Singer} [ibid. 60, 7-12 (1978; Zbl 0379.53009)] showed that an obstruction to fixing the gauge in Yang-Mills theories existed on topological grounds. In the present paper the author shows that analogous obstructions exist in fixing a continuous global gauge in the Polyakov string theory and also in 4-dimensional Einstein gravity.
