The impact of a small rigid mass on an infinite rod is treated using Laplace transforms. The rod is considered rigid viscoplastic. In accordance with several constitutive models for shear bending, the energy dissipated by viscoplastic flow is assumed to be converted into temperature increase in a simple adiabatic manner. Simple readily evaluated expressions are derived for stress, strain and temperature as functions of time and position. In an example calculation impactor kinetic energy of \(1,5\cdot 10^{1-}gm-cm^ 2/\sec^ 2\) is found to cause a temperature increase of 1.5\(\circ K\) near the impact interface. It is believed that the results reported here may serve as a ''benchmark'' for finite element impact codes such as EPIC-II.
