Using a set of state variables, defining the state of the system at any instant, the author gives a general theory and establishes upper and lower bounds for steady and cyclic loading for a material exhibiting creep and plastic deformation. Of importance for high-temperature mechanical design, the reference stress method is extended up to the limit load in case of steady loading, and to the shakedown load in case of cyclic loading.
