A linear system of differential equations with periodic coefficients is considered. The authors give an approximation to the monodromy matrix dividing the period into equal small intervals and approximating in each interval the original system by a piecewise constant system. Connections between stability properties of the zero solutions of the original and the approximating system are proved.
