In 1905 \textit{I. Schur} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 130, 66--76 (1905; JFM 36.0140.01)] proved a theorem describing all commutative subalgebras of maximal dimension of the matrix ring \((K)_n\). His proof made use of the algebraic closure of the field \(K\). In this paper the authors give a proof of the above theorem which does not require the algebraic closure of \(K\).
