The author relates the existence of Kummer-type congruences for the coefficients of a power series \(f(t)\) to the existence of congruences among the coefficients of the invariant differential on a 1-dimensional formal group deduced from \(f(t)\). He then shows how Kummer-type congruences arise from rational functions on algebraic curves.
