The author gives a characterization of the Grassmannian \(SO(p+2)/SO(p)\times SO(2)\) using a property of the shape operator of the small geodesic spheres. The method is similar to that used by [\textit{D. E. Blair} and \textit{A. J. Ledger} [Rocky Mt. J. Math. 15, 573-584 (1984; Zbl 0547.53026)] and by \textit{A. J. Ledger} [Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 15, 99- 112 (1984; Zbl 0531.53036)].
