The paper is concerned with the stability and complexity of a compartmental system. Several complexity indices are introduced and shown to be related to the eigenvalues of the system matrix. It is shown that for a closed compartmental system, the Shannon index is equal to -Tr(A), where ''Tr'' denotes the trace of a matrix A. Moreover, the complexity index is shown to be equal to \(-(\beta +1)Tr(A)\) for \(\beta >0\).
