The paper deals with the problem of approximating plane curves in the sense that an approximation operator (for instance trigonometric polynomial expansion) is applied to a class of parametric representations of a given curve and the parametrization is to be chosen such as to minimize the deviation from the curve in the sense of some metric. A rather general iterative scheme is given to determine satisfactory parametrizations. Applications to coding of information in television systems are discussed and examples illustrate the usefulness of the approach.
