The main result of this paper is the following theorem. Let (X,\(\tau)\) be a completely regular topological space. Then X is normal if and only if for each closed subset X' of X and for each proximity \(\delta\) ' compatible with \(\tau\) \(| X'\), there is a proximity \(\delta\) on X that is compatible with \(\tau\) and \(\delta | X'=\delta '\).
