Identifiability of the factor analysis model is discussed, and some recent results and their relation to previous work are surveyed. Sufficient conditions for local identifiability are presented. A counterexample shows that these conditions are not necessary in general. A simple counting rule for local identifiability of the factor analysis model is given generically. Finally some open problems are formulated.
