The author answers a question posed by S. Feigelstock: Let G be a mixed abelian group such that for some prime p, G has nontrivial p-component and the torsion-free factor group of G is not p-divisible. Then there exists an associative commutative ring R whose additive group is G such that the torsion subgroup of G is not a ring direct summand of R.
