The Adams-Novikov spectral sequence is an \(E_ 2\)-term which is isomorphic to an Ext group derived from a certain universal formal group law. The author gives a survey of this result and then proceeds to generalize this Ext group over a universal formal A-module where A is the ring of integers in a number field or its p-adic completion. Applications and open questions are discussed.
