\textit{J. M. Souriau} [Lect. Notes Math. 676, 369-397 (1978; Zbl 0397.53048)] introduced a classical scattering theory in order to derive a Poincaré covariant form of the first law of thermodynamics from the principles of general relativity. The authors give an exposition of Souriau's idea in a more general context, so as to be applicable to Yang- Mills theories.
