Loosely speaking, let \(\dot x=U_ x(x,t)\) be a gradient system; then by taking the averaged value \(\bar U(\)x) of the potential U(x,t) with respect to time, one rather considers the new system \(\dot r=\bar U_ r(r)\) which is then studied. The technique is applied to oscillators with resistors of cubic nonlinearities and to the analysis of a square array of Van der Pol oscillators in order to find stable multi-mode oscillations.
