The author examines some interesting questions, raised by \textit{J. L. Ericksen} [Adv. Appl. Mech. 17, 189-244 (1977; Zbl 0475.73017)], for elastostatic fields of the St. Venant tpye. Plane strain in infinite and finite elastic strips are examined. The paper is well-written. It provides a useful analysis of the problem. It should be of interest to theoreticians working in elasticity.
