It has been shown that it is advisable to work with functional analysis instead of modal approach when assessing the behaviour of a controlled, continuous system. In this way, one avoids uncertainties about the stability behaviour of higher modes not considered in an approach using a finite number of modes only. This is so because statements obtained from positive definite, time invariant functionals are of a global nature, being valid for any possible mode. Therefore, instability criteria obtained in this way are binding for all modes. May the procedure applied to the example treated in this paper serve as guidance on how to deal in a corresponding way with other controlled, continuous systems.
