We demonstrate the linear instability of certain flows known to be stable in the case of an incompressible inviscid fluid. The instability buildup time is proportional to the time taken by the acoustic perturbations to travel a distance of the order of the characteristic scale in the flow. It is also shown that the unstable perturbations are in fact acoustic waves in the moving flow.
