Let G be a block-transitive group of automorphisms of a BIBD. Let \(r(G_ B)\) be the (generalized) rank of \(G_ B\) (B a block), and t be the number of orbits of \(G_ B\). Then \(r(G)=r(G_ B)-t+1\). Proofs are simple and enlightening. A classification of such groups G (acting faithfully on points) with maximal rank is given.
