This is a well written expository paper devoted to the studies which grew out of Hilbert's problem 13. The presentation is constructed from the point of view of ''functional complexity''. This means a measure of comparison that two functions of several variables have the same complexity if they can be represented in a finite number of steps from functions belonging to the same class or classes.
