This paper is concerned with a nonlinear free boundary problem which arises in plasma physics. It describes the shape of a confined plasma in a Tokamak machine and contains several models previously studied by other authors. Using degree theory, the present author first establishes the existence of solutions to a sequence of regularized problems. He then obtains a solution to the original problem by passing to the limit. At the end of the paper several possible extensions are also indicated.
